CBS fired radio show host Don Imus after 28 years in the weekday mornings drive time slot, following the controversy over his now infamous, “nappy-headed hos,” remark.
Imus’ comments about the mostly black Rutger’s womens basketball time have been publicly renounced by civil rights groups, but more importantly by the growing lis t of CBS sponsors that are pulling the plug on Imus’ show.
NBC News President Steve Capus stated,“I take no joy in this. It’s not a particularly happy moment, but it needed to happen,” he said. “I can’t ignore the fact that there is a very long list of inappropriate comments, of inappropriate banter, and it has to stop.”
If we’ve learned anything from the “sultans of smut” Larry Flynt an
d Howard Stern, it’s that controversy creates publicity. And we all know, any publicity is good publicity. Both Flynt and Stern paid for their attempt of pushing public standards of decency; Stern’s career fines, exceeding $2.5 million and Flynt’s never ending legal battles, that lead him all the way to the Supreme Court. Both, however continue their titanic success in the same lewd manner that gained the attention and problems in the first place. (Picture: Larry Flynt and his “nappy-headed hos”)
Though sponsors are shying away from Imus, after his surely impending stint in “rehab” for “sensitivity training,” his show will be more popular than it was to begin with and the same advertisers that jumped ship will be desperate to get back on board.
