Avatar Takes the Theatre Stage Christmas Week!

I have to say, I have never seen Manhattan so udderly empty and bare of humans as it was on Christmas Day!
After standing in line at the theaters for 45minutes to purchase movie tickets for Avatar, I have realized where most of New Yorkers were hiding, hence, all show-times were sold out and I was left to settle with the less liked film choices.
Avatar, which came out December 18th, seems to have blown the box office off the roof grossing closely to $73million on approximately 7000 screens in the opening week, which is the highest rating seen for a movie that is neither a remake, a sequel, nor a direct adaptation.
Avatar is second highest grossing December film right after “I am Legend” in 2007, with $77.2million.
Written and directed by James Cameron, Avatar is a fantastical tale about a paraplegic marine dispatched on a unique mission to planet Pandora, who is torn between obeying orders and protecting the world he feels is his home.
Available in IMAX and 3D presentation, Avatar set a new 3D record of $52 million, showing on 3129 3D screens. Previously climbed 3D films followed “Up” with $35.4 and Monsters vs Aliens with $32.7.
For a fantasy/science fiction, action/adventure film that is not based on pre-established material, Avatar’s ratings are immaculate, as well having audiences emotionally vested into computer generated characters in a serious reality based setting, no wonder this film devoured the office box this week.
Avatar’s popularity across the ocean reached to $159.72 million from 106 territories, excluding markets such as Japan China and Italy, of which 25 percent of screenings was 3D, accounting for over 50percent of the gross total.
With 9 nominations for Golden Globe and more to come, Avatar is slowly climbing a high ladder of Cameron’s famously watched classics such was Titanic in 1997.
It is safe to say James Cameron’s comeback after dozen years has proven the fact that, indeed he is “King of the world”.
Cameron had written the storyline for Avatar a few years back, however realized that the technology to create his film did not exist yet, thus finally after perfecting a screenplay for all these years he is able to present every aspect of the actor’s performance in the final development of the CG character, as it is live on screen. Nothing is unimportant in Avatar, every aspect of the screen tells a story, being that Avatar has surely been in production for the past 4 years, reaching this high is no surprise for Cameron, rather a solid pat on the back for mustering such an intense sci-fi adventure.
Such solid feature brings to mind the question, “has James Cameron gone ahead of himself by setting his mark too high?”
I guess we are left to find out- hopefully not as long as another 12 years
